After three years of growth, the West African starter battery market decreased by -5.2% to $X in 2022. In general, consumption, however, showed a prominent increase. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

In general, exports enjoyed a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 120%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, starter battery exports totaled $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 110%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

Togo (X units) and Nigeria (X units) prevails in exports structure, together making up 82% of total exports. Ghana (X units), Mauritania (X units), Burkina Faso (X units), Senegal (X units) and Niger (X units) took a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Togo (with a CAGR of +524.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest starter battery supplying countries in Western Africa were Togo ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Ghana ($X), with a combined 87% share of total exports.

Togo, with a CAGR of +437.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per unit, declining by -2.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 17% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2021, and then shrank modestly in the following year.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Niger ($X per unit) and Togo ($X per unit), while Nigeria ($X per unit) and Ghana ($X per unit) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Niger (+2.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Western Africa

In 2022, after four years of growth, there was decline in purchases abroad of lead-acid accumulators for starting piston engines, when their volume decreased by -1.2% to X units. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 67%. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2021, and then contracted modestly in the following year.

In value terms, starter battery imports contracted to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 39%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

Ghana represented the key importing country with an import of about X units, which accounted for 46% of total imports. Guinea (X units) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Mali (X units), Mauritania (X units) and Cote d'Ivoire (X units). All these countries together held approx. 39% share of total imports. Nigeria (X units) and Gambia (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to starter battery imports into Ghana stood at +18.3%. At the same time, Gambia (+35.8%), Mali (+33.0%), Mauritania (+24.1%), Guinea (+18.7%) and Cote d'Ivoire (+8.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Gambia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +35.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Nigeria (-5.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Ghana, Mali, Guinea, Mauritania and Gambia increased by +16, +6.9, +5.4, +5.1 and +2.6 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Ghana ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported lead-acid accumulators for starting piston engines in Western Africa, comprising 38% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mali ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Guinea, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Ghana stood at +11.3%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Mali (+32.7% per year) and Guinea (+12.5% per year).
