Leek Market Size in Western Africa

In 2022, the West African leek market decreased by -2.7% to $X for the first time since 2016, thus ending a five-year rising trend. Overall, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the market value increased by 9.4% against the previous year. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Leek Production in Western Africa

In value terms, leek production dropped slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 24%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

The country with the largest volume of leek production was Niger (X tons), accounting for 78% of total volume. Moreover, leek production in Niger exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Benin (X tons), sixfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Niger totaled +1.2%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Benin (+2.2% per year) and Senegal (+2.0% per year).

The average leek yield stood at X tons per ha in 2022, approximately reflecting the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the yield, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 4.7% against the previous year. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the leek yield remained at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the leek harvested area in Western Africa shrank to X ha, approximately equating 2021. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the harvested area increased by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to leek production attained the maximum at X ha in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Leek Exports

Exports in Western Africa

In 2022, after five years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of leeks and other alliaceous vegetables, when their volume increased by 50% to X tons. In general, exports saw prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 233%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, leek exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 227% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Senegal prevails in exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 82% of total exports in 2022. The following exporters - Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Burkina Faso (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Mali (X tons), Nigeria (X tons) and Niger (X tons) - together made up 18% of total exports.

Senegal was also the fastest-growing in terms of the leeks and other alliaceous vegetables exports, with a CAGR of +50.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Mali (+37.2%), Nigeria (+28.2%), Ghana (+11.2%), Cote d'Ivoire (+11.1%) and Niger (+6.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Burkina Faso (-10.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Senegal and Mali increased by +75 and +1.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Senegal ($X) remains the largest leek supplier in Western Africa, comprising 85% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Burkina Faso ($X), with a 4.6% share of total exports. It was followed by Cote d'Ivoire, with a 4.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Senegal totaled +57.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Burkina Faso (-12.0% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (+2.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, declining by -19.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a perceptible shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the export price increased by 40% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Burkina Faso ($X per ton), while Niger ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+7.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Leek Imports

Imports in Western Africa

Leek imports expanded slightly to X tons in 2022, growing by 4.7% on 2021. Total imports indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -2.4% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 70% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, leek imports dropped slightly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a perceptible expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 59%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

Imports by Country

Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Burkina Faso (X tons) represented the major importers of leeks and other alliaceous vegetables in 2022, reaching near 23% and 22% of total imports, respectively. Mauritania (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 13% share, followed by Cabo Verde (11%), Niger (9.3%), Mali (7.4%) and Senegal (6.3%).

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Burkina Faso (with a CAGR of +58.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X), Mali ($X) and Cabo Verde ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 62% of total imports. Mauritania, Senegal, Niger and Burkina Faso lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 21%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Burkina Faso, with a CAGR of +69.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -4.5% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.6%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the import price increased by 30%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2021, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mali ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Burkina Faso (+6.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
