The West African lettuce and chicory market rose to $X in 2022, growing by 3% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, enjoyed a prominent increase. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, lettuce and chicory production stood at $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, continues to indicate a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the production volume increased by 48% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Niger (X tons) remains the largest lettuce and chicory producing country in Western Africa, comprising approx. 80% of total volume. Moreover, lettuce and chicory production in Niger exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Mali (X tons), fourfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Niger totaled +16.8%.

In 2022, the average lettuce and chicory yield in Western Africa reduced to X tons per ha, which is down by -3.4% compared with 2021. The yield indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, lettuce and chicory yield increased by +67.8% against 2012 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the yield increased by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the lettuce and chicory yield attained the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2021, and then dropped modestly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The lettuce and chicory harvested area contracted to X ha in 2022, dropping by -1.6% against the year before. In general, the harvested area, however, recorded a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the harvested area increased by 47% against the previous year. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2021, and then reduced slightly in the following year.

Exports in Western Africa

In 2022, exports of lettuce and chicory in Western Africa skyrocketed to X tons, rising by 70% against the previous year's figure. In general, exports saw a pronounced increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 5,944% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, lettuce and chicory exports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 4,074% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Senegal (X tons) and Burkina Faso (X tons) dominates exports structure, together comprising 95% of total exports. Mali (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Burkina Faso (with a CAGR of +61.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, the largest lettuce and chicory supplying countries in Western Africa were Senegal ($X), Burkina Faso ($X) and Mali ($X), together comprising 98% of total exports.

Burkina Faso, with a CAGR of +68.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -13.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded pronounced growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 323% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Mali ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Burkina Faso (+4.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Western Africa

Lettuce and chicory imports declined dramatically to X tons in 2022, which is down by -18.7% against 2021 figures. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 90%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then declined sharply in the following year.

In value terms, lettuce and chicory imports fell remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a noticeable expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 101%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then contracted remarkably in the following year.

Imports by Country

Cote d'Ivoire was the major importer of lettuce and chicory in Western Africa, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was approx. 36% of total imports in 2022. Togo (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Nigeria (X tons), Guinea (X tons), Mali (X tons) and Cabo Verde (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 45% share of total imports. Ghana (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to lettuce and chicory imports into Cote d'Ivoire stood at -5.4%. At the same time, Cabo Verde (+17.2%), Guinea (+16.6%), Mali (+8.8%), Togo (+3.5%) and Ghana (+2.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cabo Verde emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +17.2% from 2012-2022. Nigeria experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Guinea (+6.2 p.p.), Cabo Verde (+4.1 p.p.), Togo (+3.8 p.p.) and Mali (+3.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Cote d'Ivoire (-28.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported lettuce and chicory in Western Africa, comprising 48% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Nigeria ($X), with a 10% share of total imports. It was followed by Ghana, with an 8.4% share.

In Cote d'Ivoire, lettuce and chicory imports expanded at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Nigeria (-3.1% per year) and Ghana (+9.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -4.2% against the previous year. Import price indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, lettuce and chicory import price increased by +39.1% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 31% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then contracted modestly in the following year.
