Lignite Market Size in Western Africa

The West African lignite market expanded markedly to $X in 2022, surging by 13% against the previous year. In general, consumption continues to indicate strong growth. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Lignite Production in Western Africa

In value terms, lignite production stood at $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -0.2% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 22%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2020, waning by -28.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a dramatic descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the export price increased by 105% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2020, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Ghana.

From 2013 to 2020, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Ghana amounted to -46.0% per year.

Lignite Imports

Imports in Western Africa

Lignite imports expanded slightly to X tons in 2022, with an increase of 2.6% compared with 2021 figures. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 110%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, lignite imports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed a mild increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 137%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Senegal (X tons), Ghana (X tons) and Niger (X tons) represented roughly 81% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Liberia (X tons), making up a 13% share of total imports. Nigeria (X tons) and Guinea (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Guinea (with a CAGR of +58.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Ghana ($X), Senegal ($X) and Niger ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 89% share of total imports. Liberia, Guinea and Nigeria lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 10%.

Guinea, with a CAGR of +60.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 28% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 77%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while Niger ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+5.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
