Exports in Western Africa
In 2021, the amount of lime exported in Western Africa plummeted to X tons, falling by -16.4% against 2020 figures. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 57%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, lime exports dropped notably to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a slight decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 44% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Ghana dominates exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was approx. 94% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Mali (X tons), committing a 5.8% share of total exports.
Ghana experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of lime. At the same time, Mali (+36.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mali emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +36.6% from 2012-2021. Mali (+5.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Ghana saw its share reduced by -3.7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, Ghana ($X) remains the largest lime supplier in Western Africa, comprising 96% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mali ($X), with a 3.7% share of total exports.
In Ghana, lime exports plunged by an average annual rate of -1.3% over the period from 2012-2021.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, dropping by -5.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a slight setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 6%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while Mali totaled $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (-1.5%).
Lime Imports
Imports in Western Africa
In 2021, overseas purchases of lime increased by 29% to X tons, rising for the fourth year in a row after two years of decline. Total imports indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +61.0% against 2017 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, lime imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a mild slump. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Ghana (X tons) was the largest importer of lime, comprising 45% of total imports. Guinea (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 15% share, followed by Cote d'Ivoire (11%), Burkina Faso (9%) and Mali (4.8%). The following importers - Mauritania (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons) - each accounted for a 7.6% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to lime imports into Ghana stood at +2.7%. At the same time, Guinea (+8.4%), Cote d'Ivoire (+5.8%), Nigeria (+4.5%) and Burkina Faso (+1.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Guinea emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +8.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Mali (-1.0%) and Mauritania (-10.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Guinea (+6 p.p.) and Cote d'Ivoire (+2.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Mali (-1.7 p.p.) and Mauritania (-8.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest lime importing markets in Western Africa were Ghana ($X), Burkina Faso ($X) and Guinea ($X), with a combined 66% share of total imports.
Guinea, with a CAGR of +10.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, declining by -9.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a pronounced decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 6.1% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Burkina Faso ($X per ton), while Ghana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritania (+3.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
