Exports in Western Africa

Lithium-ion accumulator exports skyrocketed to X units in 2021, growing by 16% against 2020. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 116% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, lithium-ion accumulator exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports enjoyed a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 265% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

The biggest shipments were from Nigeria (X units), Sierra Leone (X units), Togo (X units) and Cote d'Ivoire (X units), together amounting to 87% of total export. It was distantly followed by Senegal (X units), mixing up a 6% share of total exports. The following exporters - Mali (X units) and Niger (X units) - together made up 5.3% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Cote d'Ivoire (with a CAGR of +93.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Sierra Leone ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Togo ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 66% share of total exports. Niger, Mali, Senegal and Cote d'Ivoire lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 30%.

Among the main exporting countries, Cote d'Ivoire, with a CAGR of +64.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per unit, growing by 13% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a notable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the export price increased by 179%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Niger ($X per unit), while Cote d'Ivoire ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sierra Leone (+25.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Western Africa

In 2021, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of lithium-ion accumulators, when their volume decreased by -11.4% to X units. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 887%. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2020, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, lithium-ion accumulator imports contracted to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 478% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.

Imports by Country

Nigeria (X units) and Ghana (X units) represented roughly 63% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X units), Burkina Faso (X units) and Senegal (X units), together achieving a 33% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Burkina Faso (with a CAGR of +128.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest lithium-ion accumulator importing markets in Western Africa were Nigeria ($X), Ghana ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a combined 76% share of total imports. Burkina Faso and Senegal lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 12%.

Among the main importing countries, Burkina Faso, with a CAGR of +128.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per unit, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the import price increased by 145%. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per unit), while Senegal ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (+2.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
