From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, shrinking by -10.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, enjoyed significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 463% against the previous year. Imports in Western Africa

Lithium oxide imports surged to X tons in 2021, jumping by 26% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, imports recorded buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 355% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, lithium oxide imports contracted to $X in 2021. Overall, imports saw significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 207%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Ghana was the main importer of lithium oxides in Western Africa, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was approx. 79% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Nigeria (X tons), comprising a 17% share of total imports. Senegal (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

Imports into Ghana increased at an average annual rate of +12.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Senegal (+89.7%) and Nigeria (+29.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Senegal, with a CAGR of +67.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -22.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, posted strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 141%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Ghana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+2.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
