For the fifth consecutive year, the West African public works machinery market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 28% to $X in 2021. In general, consumption saw prominent growth. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, public works machinery production fell to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, enjoyed a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 33%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.

Exports in Western Africa

Public works machinery exports fell rapidly to X units in 2021, dropping by -29.2% on 2020 figures. Over the period under review, exports faced a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 67% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, public works machinery exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 76%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Benin (X units), Sierra Leone (X units) and Togo (X units) represented the main exporter of machinery for public works and building in Western Africa, generating 71% of total export. Senegal (X units) ranks next in terms of the total exports with an 8.7% share, followed by Niger (7.6%) and Cote d'Ivoire (6.5%). Mali (X units) held a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Sierra Leone (with a CAGR of +56.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, Niger ($X) emerged as the largest public works machinery supplier in Western Africa, comprising 58% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Benin ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Togo, with a 6.4% share.

In Niger, public works machinery exports expanded at an average annual rate of +47.2% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Benin (+4.2% per year) and Togo (+0.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, with an increase of 118% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a significant increase. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Niger ($X per unit), while Sierra Leone ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Niger (+55.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Western Africa

In 2021, purchases abroad of machinery for public works and building increased by 48% to X units, rising for the fourth year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports showed prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 2,489% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, public works machinery imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate a resilient expansion. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Ghana (X units) represented the main importer of machinery for public works and building, committing 35% of total imports. Nigeria (X units) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Burkina Faso (X units), Gambia (X units) and Cote d'Ivoire (X units). All these countries together took approx. 54% share of total imports. The following importers - Togo (X units) and Benin (X units) - each reached a 3.5% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Burkina Faso (with a CAGR of +54.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest public works machinery importing markets in Western Africa were Cote d'Ivoire ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Ghana ($X), together accounting for 82% of total imports. These countries were followed by Burkina Faso, Benin, Togo and Gambia, which together accounted for a further 4.3%.

Among the main importing countries, Burkina Faso, with a CAGR of +51.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per unit, picking up by 59% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a pronounced shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the import price increased by 1,793% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per unit), while Gambia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
