Exports in Western Africa

After five years of decline, shipments abroad of machinery for solid-liquid separation increased by 13% to X units in 2022. Total exports indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 69% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, solid-liquid separator exports fell to $X in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a slight expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 67% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Mali represented the major exporting country with an export of around X units, which resulted at 41% of total exports. Cote d'Ivoire (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 13% share, followed by Senegal (11%), Guinea (9.5%), Niger (5.3%) and Nigeria (4.9%). Togo (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Mali was also the fastest-growing in terms of the machinery for solid-liquid separation exports, with a CAGR of +27.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Togo (+26.1%), Niger (+19.4%) and Guinea (+17.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Senegal (-4.6%), Cote d'Ivoire (-7.3%) and Nigeria (-11.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Mali (+37 p.p.), Guinea (+7.3 p.p.), Niger (+4.3 p.p.) and Togo (+2.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Senegal (-9.5 p.p.), Nigeria (-13.3 p.p.) and Cote d'Ivoire (-18.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Mali ($X) remains the largest solid-liquid separator supplier in Western Africa, comprising 43% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Senegal, with a 9.8% share.

In Mali, solid-liquid separator exports expanded at an average annual rate of +26.2% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Cote d'Ivoire (+0.2% per year) and Senegal (-9.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per thousand units in 2022, with a decrease of -12.4% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the export price increased by 65%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per thousand units in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per thousand units), while Niger ($X per thousand units) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (+8.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Western Africa

In 2022, purchases abroad of machinery for solid-liquid separation decreased by -17.4% to X units, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 165% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X units in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, solid-liquid separator imports dropped to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 71% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Nigeria dominates imports structure, accounting for X units, which was near 82% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Ghana (X units), generating a 5.1% share of total imports. Cote d'Ivoire (X units), Guinea (X units), Senegal (X units) and Niger (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to solid-liquid separator imports into Nigeria stood at +8.2%. At the same time, Guinea (+12.9%), Niger (+10.3%), Senegal (+9.1%), Cote d'Ivoire (+7.7%) and Ghana (+4.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Guinea emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +12.9% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Nigeria increased by +4.3 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported machinery for solid-liquid separation in Western Africa, comprising 47% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ghana ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Cote d'Ivoire, with an 11% share.

In Nigeria, solid-liquid separator imports declined by an average annual rate of -2.2% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Ghana (+3.7% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (+9.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per thousand units in 2022, rising by 6.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 27%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per thousand units. From 2014 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Niger ($X per thousand units), while Nigeria ($X per thousand units) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (+1.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
