From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, food manufacture machinery exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw perceptible growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 405% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, Senegal (X units), Cote d'Ivoire (X units), Cabo Verde (X units) and Mauritania (X units) represented the key exporter of machinery for the preparation or manufacture of food or drink in Western Africa, mixing up 79% of total export. Sierra Leone (X units) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Benin (X units). All these countries together took approx. 14% share of total exports. In 2021, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per unit, jumping by 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a perceptible slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the export price increased by 55% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Benin ($X per unit), while Cabo Verde ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of machinery for the preparation or manufacture of food or drink, when their volume decreased by -44.6% to X units. Overall, imports, however, showed a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 73%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2020, and then reduced remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, food manufacture machinery imports shrank remarkably to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, posted noticeable growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 137%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Nigeria represented the main importing country with an import of around X units, which reached 68% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Ghana (X units), creating a 19% share of total imports. The following importers - Senegal (X units), Burkina Faso (X units), Cote d'Ivoire (X units) and Mauritania (X units) - together made up 11% of total imports.

Imports into Nigeria increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mauritania (+26.3%), Burkina Faso (+25.5%) and Ghana (+11.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +26.3% from 2012-2021. Senegal experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Cote d'Ivoire (-2.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Ghana (+6.5 p.p.) and Burkina Faso (+2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Cote d'Ivoire (-2.7 p.p.), Senegal (-3.1 p.p.) and Nigeria (-3.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported machinery for the preparation or manufacture of food or drink in Western Africa, comprising 54% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ghana ($X), with a 25% share of total imports. It was followed by Cote d'Ivoire, with a 6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Nigeria stood at -1.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Ghana (+11.4% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (+10.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per unit, with an increase of 18% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a noticeable reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 37% against the previous year.
