The yield indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, mandarin and clementine yield decreased by -23.3% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the yield increased by 60%. Over the period under review, the mandarin and clementine yield attained the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the mandarin and clementine harvested area in Western Africa declined to X ha, shrinking by -7.4% against the previous year's figure. Overall, the harvested area continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 32%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

In 2022, approx. X tons of tangerines, mandarins, clementines, satsumas were exported in Western Africa; picking up by 500% compared with 2021 figures. In general, exports saw a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 571% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, mandarin and clementine exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, exports saw a moderate expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 812% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

The biggest shipments were from Senegal (X tons) and Mauritania (X tons), together amounting to 98% of total export.

Imports in Western Africa

For the ninth consecutive year, Western Africa recorded growth in purchases abroad of tangerines, mandarins, clementines, satsumas, which increased by 47% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports showed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 296% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, mandarin and clementine imports reached $X in 2022. Overall, imports enjoyed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 237%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Senegal was the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which finished at 61% of total imports. Burkina Faso (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 16% share, followed by Mali (7.5%), Cote d'Ivoire (4.9%) and Nigeria (4.5%). The following importers - Cabo Verde (X tons) and Ghana (X tons) - each finished at a 3.8% share of total imports.

Imports into Senegal increased at an average annual rate of +50.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Burkina Faso (+91.8%), Nigeria (+57.9%), Mali (+56.3%), Ghana (+28.7%), Cote d'Ivoire (+17.7%) and Cabo Verde (+13.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Burkina Faso emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +91.8% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Senegal, Burkina Faso, Mali and Nigeria increased by +29, +15, +4.8 and +3.1 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Senegal ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported tangerines, mandarins, clementines, satsumas in Western Africa, comprising 60% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a 9.7% share of total imports. It was followed by Nigeria, with a 9.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Senegal stood at +42.0%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Cote d'Ivoire (+15.7% per year) and Nigeria (+49.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -23.2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the import price increased by 17%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cabo Verde ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
