The average mango and mangosteen yield fell slightly to X tons per ha in 2022, dropping by -2.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the yield saw a noticeable curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the yield increased by 4.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the mango and mangosteen yield reached the peak level at X tons per ha in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The total harvested area indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, mango and mangosteen harvested area decreased by -0.4% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the harvested area increased by 29%. As a result, the harvested area attained the peak level of X ha. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the mango and mangosteen harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Western Africa

In 2022, exports of mangoes, mangosteens and guavas in Western Africa dropped rapidly to X tons, waning by -25.4% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 72%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, mango and mangosteen exports plummeted to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 82% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then shrank dramatically in the following year.

Exports by Country

Cote d'Ivoire was the largest exporter of mangoes, mangosteens and guavas in Western Africa, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 45% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Senegal (X tons), Mali (X tons) and Burkina Faso (X tons), together mixing up a 49% share of total exports. Ghana (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to mango and mangosteen exports from Cote d'Ivoire stood at +9.6%. At the same time, Ghana (+22.9%), Mali (+15.2%) and Senegal (+10.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ghana emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +22.9% from 2012-2022. Burkina Faso experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Mali (+8.2 p.p.), Ghana (+2.6 p.p.), Senegal (+2.4 p.p.) and Cote d'Ivoire (+2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Burkina Faso saw its share reduced by -12.2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, the largest mango and mangosteen supplying countries in Western Africa were Cote d'Ivoire ($X), Burkina Faso ($X) and Mali ($X), with a combined 71% share of total exports. Ghana and Senegal lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 27%.

Among the main exporting countries, Ghana, with a CAGR of +27.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, rising by 8.1% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.8%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the export price increased by 29% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while Senegal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Western Africa

In 2022, supplies from abroad of mangoes, mangosteens and guavas increased by 21% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, imports recorded buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 552%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, mango and mangosteen imports dropped to $X in 2022. Overall, imports posted a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 477% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Ghana dominates imports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 86% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Senegal (X tons), mixing up a 7.8% share of total imports. Benin (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Ghana increased at an average annual rate of +16.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Benin (+52.7%) and Senegal (+29.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Benin emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +52.7% from 2012-2022. Ghana (+51 p.p.), Senegal (+6.6 p.p.) and Benin (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Ghana ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported mangoes, mangosteens and guavas in Western Africa, comprising 88% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Senegal ($X), with a 4.4% share of total imports.

In Ghana, mango and mangosteen imports increased at an average annual rate of +22.7% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Senegal (+18.8% per year) and Benin (+26.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -19.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 46%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then reduced rapidly in the following year.
