Nigeria prevails in exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 93% of total exports in 2021. The following exporters - Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Mali (X tons) - together made up 5.4% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences exports from Nigeria stood at +12.1%. At the same time, Cote d'Ivoire (+59.4%) and Mali (+15.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. In general, imports, however, showed a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 102% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences imports fell remarkably to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 95%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then dropped significantly in the following year.

Senegal represented the key importer of manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences in Western Africa, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was approx. 60% of total imports in 2021. Nigeria (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Mauritania (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 35% share of total imports. Mali (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

Imports into Senegal increased at an average annual rate of +8.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mali (+70.0%), Nigeria (+21.9%) and Mauritania (+20.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mali emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +70.0% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Nigeria, Mauritania, Senegal and Mali increased by +15, +9.3, +7.6 and +1.7 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Senegal ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences in Western Africa, comprising 69% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Nigeria ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Mauritania, with a 7.1% share.

In Senegal, manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences imports expanded at an average annual rate of +9.4% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Nigeria (+27.8% per year) and Mauritania (+34.9% per year).

In 2021, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -14% against the previous year. Import price indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences import price increased by +70.8% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the import price increased by 99% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then reduced in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Mali ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
