Manuka Market Size in Western Africa

The West African manuka market soared to $X in 2022, increasing by 26% against the previous year. Sierra Leone dominates exports structure, reaching X tons, which was near 98% of total exports in 2022. Mali (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to manuka exports from Sierra Leone stood at +43.0%. At the same time, Mali (+68.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mali emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +68.5% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Sierra Leone and Mali increased by +2.3 and +1.6 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the export price increased by 21% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sierra Leone ($X per ton), while Mali totaled $X per ton.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of manuka increased by 343% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed significant growth. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

The countries with the highest levels of manuka imports in 2022 were Nigeria (X tons), together accounting for 97% of total import.

Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the manuka imports, with a CAGR of +60.7% from 2012 to 2022. While the share of Nigeria (+66 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported manuka in Western Africa.
