In value terms, Niger ($X) remains the largest matches supplier in Western Africa, comprising 65% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Nigeria ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Ghana, with a 12% share.

In Niger, matches exports expanded at an average annual rate of +6.9% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Nigeria (+21.6% per year) and Ghana (-2.4% per year).

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 26% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, after five years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of matches, when their volume decreased by -6.3% to X tons. Overall, imports showed a mild shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 29% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, matches imports amounted to $X in 2021. In general, imports recorded a noticeable curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 30%. Nigeria represented the key importer of matches in Western Africa, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was near 38% of total imports in 2021.
