Mate Market Size in Western Africa

In 2022, the West African mate market decreased by -20.2% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, consumption, however, enjoyed pronounced growth. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined sharply in the following year.

Mate Production in Western Africa

In value terms, mate production reduced markedly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the production volume increased by 167% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X, and then dropped markedly in the following year.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Ghana (X tons), Togo (X tons) and Gambia (X tons), together accounting for 92% of total production. Mali, Niger and Cote d'Ivoire lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 8%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Mali (with a CAGR of +27.7%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Mate Exports

Exports in Western Africa

After three years of decline, overseas shipments of mate increased by 162% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 2,803%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, mate exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, exports showed moderate growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 942%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) was the main exporter of mate, making up 59% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Nigeria (X tons), committing a 38% share of total exports. Ghana (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Nigeria (with a CAGR of +17.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) remains the largest mate supplier in Western Africa, comprising 73% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a 25% share of total exports.

In Nigeria, mate exports increased at an average annual rate of +20.5% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Cote d'Ivoire (+23.0% per year) and Ghana (-31.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -51.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 206% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then dropped notably in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Ghana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+8.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Mate Imports

Imports in Western Africa

Mate imports rose markedly to X tons in 2022, increasing by 6.5% on 2021 figures. Overall, imports, however, saw a slight decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 85%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, mate imports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 76%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Burkina Faso (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons) were the major importers of mate in 2022, accounting for approx. 35% and 32% of total imports, respectively. It was distantly followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), constituting a 19% share of total imports. The following importers - Ghana (X kg), Senegal (X kg), Sierra Leone (X kg) and Niger (X kg) - together made up 8.9% of total imports.

In value terms, the largest mate importing markets in Western Africa were Nigeria ($X), Burkina Faso ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a combined 82% share of total imports. Senegal, Ghana, Sierra Leone and Niger lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 8.6%.

Senegal, with a CAGR of +17.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 8.1% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 58% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
