From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Burkina Faso amounted to +26.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Senegal (+16.6% per year) and Nigeria (-48.6% per year).

Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the export price increased by 129%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2017 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per unit), while Nigeria ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Senegal (+6.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Western Africa

For the third year in a row, Western Africa recorded growth in overseas purchases of mattress supports, which increased by 37% to X units in 2021. Overall, imports recorded a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 75%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, mattress support imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports posted a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 49%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

The countries with the highest levels of mattress support imports in 2021 were Senegal (X units), Burkina Faso (X units), Togo (X units) and Ghana (X units), together reaching 72% of total import. It was distantly followed by Guinea (X units), comprising a 9.5% share of total imports. The following importers - Gambia (X units) and Cabo Verde (X units) - each resulted at an 8.4% share of total imports.

In value terms, Ghana ($X), Guinea ($X) and Senegal ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 60% of total imports. Gambia, Cabo Verde, Togo and Burkina Faso lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 20%.

Gambia, with a CAGR of +34.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, which is down by -12.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a pronounced setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the import price increased by 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Guinea ($X per unit), while Burkina Faso ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
