Melon Seed Market Size in Western Africa

The West African melon seed market declined modestly to $X in 2022, remaining constant against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. In 2022, after five years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of melon seed, when their volume decreased by -23.8% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 138%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then fell sharply in the following year.

In value terms, melon seed exports fell to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 171% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

Exports by Country

Ghana represented the major exporter of melon seed in Western Africa, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was near 75% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Togo (X tons), making up a 22% share of total exports. Nigeria (X kg) took a little share of total exports.

Exports from Ghana increased at an average annual rate of +20.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Togo (+69.3%) and Nigeria (+2.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Togo emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +69.3% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Togo increased by +21 percentage points.

In value terms, Ghana ($X) remains the largest melon seed supplier in Western Africa, comprising 86% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Togo ($X), with a 13% share of total exports.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, melon seed export price decreased by -25.1% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 79%. Imports in Western Africa

In 2022, overseas purchases of melon seed decreased by -10% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 202% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, melon seed imports declined to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 82% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

Imports by Country

The countries with the highest levels of melon seed imports in 2022 were Mali (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Niger (X tons), Burkina Faso (X tons) and Senegal (X tons), together amounting to 90% of total import. It was distantly followed by Ghana (X tons), comprising a 5.8% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Niger (with a CAGR of +71.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest melon seed importing markets in Western Africa were Senegal ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Mali ($X), with a combined 76% share of total imports. Burkina Faso, Ghana and Niger lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 22%.

Niger, with a CAGR of +46.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, waning by -5% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 151%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
