In 2021, overseas shipments of microscopes and diffraction apparatus decreased by -66.7% to X units for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Togo was the largest exporting country with an export of around X units, which accounted for 67% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Nigeria (X units), committing a 33% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Nigeria (with a CAGR of +4.6%).

In value terms, Togo ($X) emerged as the largest microscope supplier in Western Africa, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Nigeria ($X), with a 26% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Togo stood at -25.3%.

In 2021, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per unit, with a decrease of -15.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, posted a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 142% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2020, and then contracted remarkably in the following year.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Togo ($X per unit), while Nigeria totaled $X per unit.

In 2021, overseas purchases of microscopes and diffraction apparatus increased by 103% to X units, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. Over the period under review, imports posted a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 441% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, microscope imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports saw prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 480% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Nigeria represented the largest importing country with an import of around X units, which recorded 56% of total imports. Ghana (X units) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Mali (X units) and Guinea (X units). All these countries together took near 37% share of total imports. Cote d'Ivoire (X units) held a minor share of total imports.

Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the microscopes and diffraction apparatus imports, with a CAGR of +65.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Guinea (+31.0%), Mali (+27.9%), Ghana (+17.4%) and Cote d'Ivoire (+3.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Nigeria, with a CAGR of +52.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per unit, with a decrease of -3.3% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the import price increased by 51% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per unit in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Guinea ($X per unit), while Mali ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+4.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
