The West African mineral or aerated water market reached $X in 2022, remaining constant against the previous year. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the production volume increased by 29% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of mineral or aerated waters, when their volume decreased by -11% to X tons. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 72%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, mineral or aerated water exports shrank slightly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 116% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Ghana (X tons) and Burkina Faso (X tons) represented roughly 59% of total exports in 2022. Mali (X tons) took a 15% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Niger (7.4%) and Benin (6.2%). The following exporters - Nigeria (X tons) and Togo (X tons) - each resulted at an 8.2% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Niger (with a CAGR of +63.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Burkina Faso ($X), Mali ($X) and Ghana ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together accounting for 56% of total exports. These countries were followed by Benin, Niger, Nigeria and Togo, which together accounted for a further 29%.

Niger, with a CAGR of +41.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a slight downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the export price increased by 26%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Ghana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, approx. X tons of mineral or aerated waters were imported in Western Africa; stabilizing at 2021 figures. Total imports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +88.2% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 43%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then contracted slightly in the following year.

In value terms, mineral or aerated water imports declined to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +80.9% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 37%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then shrank in the following year.

Guinea-Bissau (X tons) and Togo (X tons) were the key importers of mineral or aerated waters in 2022, amounting to approx. 24% and 18% of total imports, respectively. Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with an 11% share, followed by Niger (9.5%), Cabo Verde (8.6%), Senegal (7.4%), Mali (6.4%) and Liberia (4.6%).

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Mali (with a CAGR of +41.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X), Guinea-Bissau ($X) and Niger ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 52% of total imports. Senegal, Mali, Cabo Verde, Liberia and Togo lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 32%.

Mali, with a CAGR of +27.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, declining by -11.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a perceptible setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the import price increased by 11%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
