In 2022, imports of moulded or pressed articles of paper pulp in Western Africa dropped significantly to X tons, shrinking by -29.9% on 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate tangible growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 56%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, paper pulp moulded articles imports shrank markedly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a slight increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 45%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined notably in the following year.

In 2022, Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) represented the key importer of moulded or pressed articles of paper pulp, generating 50% of total imports. Ghana (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Senegal (X tons), Cabo Verde (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons). All these countries together held near 47% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to paper pulp moulded articles imports into Cote d'Ivoire stood at +3.3%. At the same time, Nigeria (+25.9%), Cabo Verde (+17.1%) and Senegal (+4.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X), Ghana ($X) and Senegal ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 81% share of total imports. Cabo Verde and Nigeria lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 13%.

Nigeria, with a CAGR of +14.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, remaining constant against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a slight decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the import price increased by 14%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2021 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Nigeria ($X per ton) and Senegal ($X per ton), while Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton) and Ghana ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
