In 2022, the West African network communications equipment market decreased by -1.2% to $X, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. The total consumption indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -1.4% against 2020 indices. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, network communications equipment production totaled $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -0.5% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 45%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Western Africa
In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of network communications equipment, when their volume decreased by -16.1% to X units. In general, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 313%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, network communications equipment exports shrank notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate moderate growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 89% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then fell rapidly in the following year.
Exports by Country
Sierra Leone was the key exporter of network communications equipment in Western Africa, with the volume of exports reaching X units, which was approx. 67% of total exports in 2022. Nigeria (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 13% share, followed by Senegal (7.9%). The following exporters - Mali (X units), Cote d'Ivoire (X units), Ghana (X units) and Burkina Faso (X units) - together made up 9.7% of total exports.
Sierra Leone was also the fastest-growing in terms of the network communications equipment exports, with a CAGR of +47.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Senegal (+19.3%), Cote d'Ivoire (+12.8%), Burkina Faso (+9.3%) and Mali (+8.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Ghana (-10.6%) and Nigeria (-17.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Sierra Leone (+66 p.p.), Senegal (+6.6 p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (+2.1 p.p.) and Mali (+1.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Ghana and Nigeria saw its share reduced by -3.3% and -73.2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Sierra Leone ($X) remains the largest network communications equipment supplier in Western Africa, comprising 57% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Senegal ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Nigeria, with a 12% share.
In Sierra Leone, network communications equipment exports increased at an average annual rate of +35.0% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Senegal (+22.8% per year) and Nigeria (-14.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, dropping by -8.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw tangible growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the export price increased by 87%. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2021, and then declined in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Burkina Faso ($X per unit), while Cote d'Ivoire ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (+31.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Western Africa
In 2022, network communications equipment imports in Western Africa contracted significantly to X units, reducing by -21.3% compared with 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate a perceptible curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 103% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, network communications equipment imports reduced sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a abrupt decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 83% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Nigeria (X units), distantly followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X units), Senegal (X units), Ghana (X units) and Burkina Faso (X units) were the key importers of network communications equipment, together generating 84% of total imports. Liberia (X units) and Mali (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Senegal (with a CAGR of +15.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Ghana ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 54% of total imports. Senegal, Burkina Faso, Liberia and Mali lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 30%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Senegal, with a CAGR of +9.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, which is down by -8.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a perceptible reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the import price increased by 65%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per unit), while Nigeria ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
