In 2022, shipments abroad of non-alcoholic beverages, not containing milk decreased by -21.1% to X litres, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, exports, however, posted prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 152%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X litres. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, non-alcoholic beverage, not containing milk exports contracted to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 153% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Senegal (X litres) represented the main exporter of non-alcoholic beverages, not containing milk, making up 55% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Ghana (X litres), Togo (X litres) and Nigeria (X litres), together comprising a 43% share of total exports. Cote d'Ivoire (X litres) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Ghana (with a CAGR of +41.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Senegal ($X) remains the largest non-alcoholic beverage, not containing milk supplier in Western Africa, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ghana ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Togo, with a 6.2% share.

In Senegal, non-alcoholic beverage, not containing milk exports increased at an average annual rate of +33.4% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Ghana (+21.8% per year) and Togo (-5.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per litre, picking up by 25% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a perceptible curtailment. The level of export peaked at $X per litre in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per litre), while Ghana ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (-2.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Western Africa

In 2022, purchases abroad of non-alcoholic beverages, not containing milk decreased by -9.8% to X litres for the first time since 2016, thus ending a five-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X litres in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, non-alcoholic beverage, not containing milk imports shrank to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a pronounced shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 28%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Ghana (X litres), Senegal (X litres), Mali (X litres), Cote d'Ivoire (X litres), Burkina Faso (X litres) and Nigeria (X litres) represented roughly 76% of total imports in 2022. Togo (X litres) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Guinea-Bissau (X litres). All these countries together held near 9.6% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Mali (with a CAGR of +37.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest non-alcoholic beverage, not containing milk importing markets in Western Africa were Ghana ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Senegal ($X), with a combined 48% share of total imports. Cote d'Ivoire, Mali, Burkina Faso, Guinea-Bissau and Togo lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 37%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Mali, with a CAGR of +31.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per litre, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the import price increased by 3.3%. The level of import peaked at $X per litre in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per litre), while Togo ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
