The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 37%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, non-cellular polypropylene film exports surged to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Togo (X tons) represented the main exporter of non-cellular polypropylene films, sheets, foil and strip, achieving 80% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Nigeria (X tons), comprising a 12% share of total exports. The following exporters - Senegal (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) - each reached a 5.5% share of total exports.

Exports from Togo increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Cote d'Ivoire (+37.0%), Nigeria (+28.6%) and Senegal (+2.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cote d'Ivoire emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +37.0% from 2012-2021. While the share of Nigeria (+11 p.p.) and Cote d'Ivoire (+2.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Togo (-6.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Togo ($X) remains the largest non-cellular polypropylene film supplier in Western Africa, comprising 76% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Nigeria ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Senegal, with a 1.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Togo stood at +1.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Nigeria (+39.8% per year) and Senegal (-4.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 48% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports in Western Africa

In 2021, the amount of non-cellular polypropylene films, sheets, foil and strip imported in Western Africa fell dramatically to X tons, which is down by -22.5% compared with 2020. Total imports indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +78.4% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 130%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then declined notably in the following year.

In value terms, non-cellular polypropylene film imports fell to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a measured expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 117% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then declined in the following year.

Nigeria prevails in imports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 61% of total imports in 2021. Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 9.7% share, followed by Ghana (9.2%), Togo (7.5%) and Senegal (7%). The following importers - Mali (X tons) and Guinea (X tons) - each recorded a 3.8% share of total imports.

Nigeria experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of non-cellular polypropylene films, sheets, foil and strip. At the same time, Guinea (+18.5%), Ghana (+16.9%), Mali (+12.5%), Senegal (+5.6%), Togo (+4.8%) and Cote d'Ivoire (+4.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Guinea emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +18.5% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Ghana, Senegal, Cote d'Ivoire and Togo increased by +6.6, +2, +1.9 and +1.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
