Overall, exports posted a measured expansion. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, non-electrical lamp exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed a slight expansion. The level of export peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Togo represented the main exporting country with an export of about X units, which recorded 52% of total exports. Ghana (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 24% share, followed by Benin (6.1%) and Nigeria (4.9%). Cote d'Ivoire (X units), Burkina Faso (X units) and Liberia (X units) held a little share of total exports.

Togo was also the fastest-growing in terms of the non-electrical lamps and lighting fittings exports, with a CAGR of +65.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Benin (+58.4%), Cote d'Ivoire (+35.8%) and Burkina Faso (+23.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Ghana experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Nigeria (-16.8%) and Liberia (-22.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Togo (+51 p.p.), Benin (+6.1 p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (+3.4 p.p.) and Burkina Faso (+3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Ghana, Liberia and Nigeria saw its share reduced by -5.8%, -19.3% and -27% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Ghana ($X) emerged as the largest non-electrical lamp supplier in Western Africa, comprising 45% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Nigeria ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Togo, with a 15% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Ghana amounted to +5.9%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Nigeria (+0.3% per year) and Togo (+45.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per unit, which is down by -44% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a mild decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the export price increased by 142% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2020 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per unit), while Togo ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Western Africa

In 2021, supplies from abroad of non-electrical lamps and lighting fittings decreased by -25.4% to X units, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. In general, imports continue to indicate a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 82%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, non-electrical lamp imports declined modestly to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -26.6% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 60%. It was distantly followed by Senegal (X units), Cote d'Ivoire (X units), Ghana (X units) and Benin (X units), together committing a 46% share of total imports. Burkina Faso (X units) held a minor share of total imports.
