In 2021, approx. X tons of non-medical x-rays were exported in Western Africa; rising by 34% against the year before. In general, exports showed a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 1,663% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, non-medical x-ray exports declined to $X in 2021. Overall, exports posted a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 488%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Senegal was the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which resulted at 78% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Mali (X kg) and Nigeria (X kg), together constituting a 16% share of total exports. Burkina Faso (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Senegal was also the fastest-growing in terms of the non-medical x-rays exports, with a CAGR of +74.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mali (+61.5%) and Burkina Faso (+39.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Nigeria (-8.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Senegal (+75 p.p.) and Mali (+9.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Nigeria (-69.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest non-medical x-ray supplying countries in Western Africa were Mali ($X), Senegal ($X) and Nigeria ($X), together accounting for 84% of total exports. Burkina Faso lagged somewhat behind, accounting for a further 8%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Burkina Faso, with a CAGR of +77.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, declining by -27.4% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a noticeable setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 an increase of 198% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Burkina Faso ($X per ton), while Senegal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Burkina Faso (+27.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Western Africa

For the third consecutive year, Western Africa recorded growth in purchases abroad of non-medical x-rays, which increased by 48% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 120%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, non-medical x-ray imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports enjoyed a buoyant expansion. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Nigeria represented the key importer of non-medical x-rays in Western Africa, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was approx. 50% of total imports in 2021. Guinea (X tons) took a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Cote d'Ivoire (12%), Ghana (11%) and Cabo Verde (6.5%). Mali (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to non-medical x-ray imports into Nigeria stood at +16.4%. At the same time, Guinea (+37.8%), Cote d'Ivoire (+35.8%), Cabo Verde (+17.2%), Ghana (+16.1%) and Mali (+5.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Guinea emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +37.8% from 2012-2021. Nigeria (+14 p.p.), Guinea (+10 p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (+9.7 p.p.), Ghana (+3.1 p.p.) and Cabo Verde (+2.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Mali saw its share reduced by -1.6% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported non-medical x-rays in Western Africa, comprising 40% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Guinea ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Ghana, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Nigeria amounted to +25.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Guinea (+40.5% per year) and Ghana (+25.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price posted a modest increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 121% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
