The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, non-wheat flour production dropped to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the production volume increased by 16%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.

Exports in Western Africa

Non-wheat flour exports surged to X tons in 2021, picking up by 110% compared with 2020. Overall, exports posted strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 625%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, non-wheat flour exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 348% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Togo represented the largest exporter of non-wheat flours in Western Africa, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was approx. 57% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Nigeria (X tons), Ghana (X tons) and Mali (X tons), together generating a 36% share of total exports. Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Burkina Faso (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Togo was also the fastest-growing in terms of the non-wheat flours exports, with a CAGR of +63.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Nigeria (+29.1%), Mali (+16.0%) and Ghana (+8.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Cote d'Ivoire (-6.7%) and Burkina Faso (-14.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Togo and Nigeria increased by +57 and +19 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, the largest non-wheat flour supplying countries in Western Africa were Ghana ($X), Togo ($X) and Nigeria ($X), together accounting for 72% of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Togo, with a CAGR of +48.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -32.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a noticeable setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the export price increased by 82%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (+22.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Western Africa

In 2021, purchases abroad of non-wheat flours increased by 3.9% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after four years of decline. Total imports indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +68.4% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 39%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, non-wheat flour imports shrank to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 92%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Nigeria was the key importer of non-wheat flours in Western Africa, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was approx. 36% of total imports in 2021. Senegal (X tons) took a 17% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Mauritania (12%), Cabo Verde (11%), Benin (6.5%), Gambia (6.3%) and Niger (4.5%).

Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the non-wheat flours imports, with a CAGR of +38.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Benin (+37.3%), Senegal (+22.7%), Gambia (+13.9%), Cabo Verde (+9.6%) and Mauritania (+6.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Niger (-17.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Nigeria (+34 p.p.), Senegal (+14 p.p.), Benin (+6 p.p.), Cabo Verde (+4.6 p.p.), Gambia (+3.6 p.p.) and Mauritania (+3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Niger (-28.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported non-wheat flours in Western Africa, comprising 44% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Senegal ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Cabo Verde, with a 9% share.

In Nigeria, non-wheat flour imports increased at an average annual rate of +39.7% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Senegal (+17.9% per year) and Cabo Verde (+6.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -14.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a noticeable contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 45% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Gambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Gambia (+5.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
