Frozen norway lobster imports fell sharply to X tons in 2022, shrinking by -30.9% compared with the year before. In general, imports showed a abrupt curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 140%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, frozen norway lobster imports contracted sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, imports showed a drastic downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 187% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Cote d'Ivoire represented the largest importing country with an import of around X tons, which accounted for 47% of total imports. Cabo Verde (X kg) ranks second in terms of the total imports with an 18% share, followed by Niger (16%), Mali (5.9%) and Burkina Faso (5.6%). Benin (X kg) and Ghana (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Cote d'Ivoire increased at an average annual rate of +41.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Ghana (+72.8%), Burkina Faso (+16.4%), Niger (+15.0%) and Mali (+8.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ghana emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +72.8% from 2012-2022. Benin experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Cabo Verde (-26.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Cote d'Ivoire, Niger, Burkina Faso, Mali, Benin and Ghana increased by +47, +15, +5.3, +5.2, +3 and +2 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported frozen norway lobsters in Western Africa, comprising 58% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Cabo Verde ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Niger, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Cote d'Ivoire amounted to +71.3%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Cabo Verde (-22.5% per year) and Niger (+17.5% per year).
