Exports in Western Africa
In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of ophthalmic instruments and appliances, when their volume decreased by -9.6% to X tons. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a temperate expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 124% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.
In value terms, ophthalmic instruments exports reduced dramatically to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a noticeable decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 78% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Mali (X kg) was the largest exporter of ophthalmic instruments and appliances, creating 68% of total exports. Burkina Faso (X kg) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Nigeria (X kg). All these countries together held near 23% share of total exports. The following exporters - Cote d'Ivoire (X kg), Ghana (X kg) and Niger (X kg) - together made up 7.5% of total exports.
Mali was also the fastest-growing in terms of the ophthalmic instruments and appliances exports, with a CAGR of +49.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Burkina Faso (+26.8%) and Cote d'Ivoire (+1.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Nigeria (-10.9%), Ghana (-16.1%) and Niger (-28.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Mali (+66 p.p.) and Burkina Faso (+12 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Ghana (-9.4 p.p.), Nigeria (-22.7 p.p.) and Niger (-43.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Mali ($X) remains the largest ophthalmic instruments supplier in Western Africa, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Burkina Faso ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Ghana, with a 7.5% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Mali amounted to +47.8%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Burkina Faso (+33.7% per year) and Ghana (+0.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, which is down by -9.4% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a abrupt downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the export price increased by 89% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+19.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Western Africa
In 2021, after nine years of growth, there was decline in overseas purchases of ophthalmic instruments and appliances, when their volume decreased by -4.5% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, showed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 88% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then shrank in the following year.
In value terms, ophthalmic instruments imports contracted to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 98% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2020, and then fell in the following year.
Imports by Country
Nigeria prevails in imports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 70% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Ghana (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), together making up a 13% share of total imports. The following importers - Senegal (X tons), Mali (X tons), Burkina Faso (X tons) and Benin (X tons) - together made up 11% of total imports.
Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the ophthalmic instruments and appliances imports, with a CAGR of +71.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Benin (+46.4%), Senegal (+28.1%), Burkina Faso (+26.8%), Cote d'Ivoire (+21.7%), Ghana (+12.9%) and Mali (+11.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Nigeria increased by +62 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported ophthalmic instruments and appliances in Western Africa, comprising 55% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Ghana, with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Nigeria totaled +58.4%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Cote d'Ivoire (+30.7% per year) and Ghana (+11.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -4.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a noticeable curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 28%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
