Exports in Western Africa

In 2022, approx. X tons of optical fiber cables were exported in Western Africa; rising by 142% against the year before. Overall, exports, however, showed a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 328% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, optical fiber cables exports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 278%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Cote d'Ivoire prevails in exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 62% of total exports in 2022. Gambia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 9.1% share, followed by Senegal (8.2%) and Nigeria (5.7%). Guinea (X kg), Ghana (X kg) and Togo (X kg) held a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to optical fiber cables exports from Cote d'Ivoire stood at +50.2%. At the same time, Togo (+63.8%), Gambia (+11.4%), Senegal (+10.5%) and Guinea (+6.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Togo emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +63.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Ghana (-24.1%) and Nigeria (-26.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Cote d'Ivoire (+61 p.p.), Gambia (+7.6 p.p.), Senegal (+6.8 p.p.), Guinea (+3.3 p.p.) and Togo (+2.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Ghana (-24.6 p.p.) and Nigeria (-51.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X) emerged as the largest optical fiber cables supplier in Western Africa, comprising 58% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Senegal ($X), with an 8% share of total exports. It was followed by Nigeria, with a 7% share.

In Cote d'Ivoire, optical fiber cables exports expanded at an average annual rate of +33.6% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Senegal (+14.3% per year) and Nigeria (-27.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a slight curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 111%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Gambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Senegal (+3.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Western Africa

In 2022, the amount of optical fiber cables imported in Western Africa surged to X tons, with an increase of 16% against 2021 figures. In general, imports enjoyed a mild expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 81% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

In value terms, optical fiber cables imports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 50%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

Nigeria was the major importer of optical fiber cables in Western Africa, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was near 36% of total imports in 2022. Senegal (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 12% share, followed by Cote d'Ivoire (11%), Ghana (9.3%), Togo (8.8%), Niger (7.2%) and Burkina Faso (6%).

Imports into Nigeria increased at an average annual rate of +31.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Burkina Faso (+52.6%), Togo (+51.1%), Senegal (+21.6%), Niger (+16.5%) and Ghana (+4.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Burkina Faso emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +52.6% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Cote d'Ivoire (-16.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Nigeria, Senegal, Togo, Burkina Faso, Niger and Ghana increased by +33, +9.9, +8.6, +5.9, +5.4 and +2.2 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported optical fiber cables in Western Africa, comprising 41% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Senegal, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Nigeria stood at +3.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Cote d'Ivoire (-13.3% per year) and Senegal (+22.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, surging by 16% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the import price increased by 75% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Burkina Faso ($X per ton), while Ghana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
