In 2021, the West African optical telescope market increased by 28% to $X, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, consumption, however, recorded a noticeable shrinkage. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 271%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, optical telescope exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a buoyant expansion. Cote d'Ivoire (X units) and Niger (X units) were the key exporters of optical telescopes in 2021, reaching approx. 33% and 33% of total exports, respectively. It was distantly followed by Burkina Faso (X units), Togo (X units) and Mali (X units), together comprising a 34% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Burkina Faso (with a CAGR of +2,611.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Mali ($X) remains the largest optical telescope supplier in Western Africa, comprising 66% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Niger ($X), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by Cote d'Ivoire, with a 6.7% share.

In 2021, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per unit, with an increase of 17% against the previous year. In general, the export price posted a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the export price increased by 2,342%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2020 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Mali ($X per unit), while Togo ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (+14.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

For the sixth year in a row, Western Africa recorded growth in purchases abroad of optical telescopes, which increased by 232% to X units in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 307%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, optical telescope imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate a significant expansion. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Nigeria dominates imports structure, recording X units, which was near 81% of total imports in 2021. Mali (X units) held an 8.4% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Niger (7.1%). Burkina Faso (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Nigeria increased at an average annual rate of +29.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mali (+151.0%), Niger (+89.7%) and Burkina Faso (+81.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mali emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +151.0% from 2012-2021. While the share of Mali (+8.4 p.p.), Niger (+6.9 p.p.) and Burkina Faso (+1.9 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Niger ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported optical telescopes in Western Africa, comprising 52% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mali ($X), with a 22% share of total imports. It was followed by Nigeria, with a 17% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Niger totaled +122.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mali (+127.8% per year) and Nigeria (+54.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per unit, with an increase of 98% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the import price increased by 499% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2016 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Niger ($X per unit), while Nigeria ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
