The West African organic surface active agent market stood at $X in 2021, increasing by 12% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Production of Organic Surface Active Agents in Western Africa

In value terms, organic surface active agent production declined modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production continues to indicate a slight curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 13% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports of Organic Surface Active Agents

Exports in Western Africa

In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of organic surface active agents, when their volume decreased by -73.9% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a modest expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 210%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then contracted notably in the following year.

In value terms, organic surface active agent exports shrank dramatically to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a mild decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 64% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2020, and then declined sharply in the following year.

Exports by Country

Senegal was the largest exporter of organic surface active agents in Western Africa, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was near 45% of total exports in 2021. Niger (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 48% share of total exports. The following exporters - Togo (X tons), Ghana (X tons) and Mali (X tons) - together made up 6.8% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Niger (with a CAGR of +37.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Senegal ($X) emerged as the largest organic surface active agent supplier in Western Africa, comprising 44% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Niger, with a 15% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Senegal totaled +12.2%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Cote d'Ivoire (-1.1% per year) and Niger (+27.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 99% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible slump. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mali (+5.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports of Organic Surface Active Agents

Imports in Western Africa

In 2021, the amount of organic surface active agents imported in Western Africa skyrocketed to X tons, picking up by 40% against the year before. Total imports indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +106.6% against 2018 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, organic surface active agent imports soared to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +77.6% against 2018 indices. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the five major importers of organic surface active agents, namely Burkina Faso, Cote d'Ivoire, Nigeria, Ghana and Mauritania, represented more than two-thirds of total import. The following importers - Senegal (X tons) and Cabo Verde (X tons) - each recorded a 3.8% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Burkina Faso (with a CAGR of +38.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest organic surface active agent importing markets in Western Africa were Cote d'Ivoire ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Ghana ($X), together comprising 72% of total imports. Burkina Faso, Mauritania, Senegal and Cabo Verde lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 21%.

Among the main importing countries, Burkina Faso, with a CAGR of +31.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, surging by 9.4% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a perceptible contraction. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Mauritania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+2.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
