Skin organic surface-active products exports soared to X tons in 2021, jumping by 18% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, exports enjoyed a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 122%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, skin organic surface-active products exports rose rapidly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports posted a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 106%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Cote d'Ivoire prevails in exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was approx. 96% of total exports in 2021. The following exporters - Ghana (X tons) and Senegal (X tons) - each recorded a 3.2% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to skin organic surface-active products exports from Cote d'Ivoire stood at +17.5%. At the same time, Senegal (+24.4%) and Ghana (+15.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Senegal emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +24.4% from 2012-2021. While the share of Cote d'Ivoire (+4.4 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X) remains the largest skin organic surface-active products supplier in Western Africa, comprising 94% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Senegal ($X), with a 2.5% share of total exports.

In Cote d'Ivoire, skin organic surface-active products exports expanded at an average annual rate of +21.1% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Senegal (+23.6% per year) and Ghana (+19.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -5.1% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.4%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the export price increased by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Ghana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+3.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Western Africa

After four years of growth, purchases abroad of organic surface-active products for washing the skin decreased by -7% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports, however, posted a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 75% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2020, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, skin organic surface-active products imports contracted to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 62%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2020, and then declined in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Ghana (X tons) represented the main importer of organic surface-active products for washing the skin, mixing up 40% of total imports. Senegal (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Mali (X tons), Benin (X tons), Guinea (X tons) and Mauritania (X tons). All these countries together held near 45% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to skin organic surface-active products imports into Ghana stood at +27.9%. At the same time, Mali (+48.4%), Guinea (+36.7%), Benin (+25.4%), Mauritania (+21.2%), Senegal (+9.3%) and Cote d'Ivoire (+6.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mali emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +48.4% from 2012-2021. Ghana (+22 p.p.), Mali (+7.3 p.p.), Guinea (+4.7 p.p.) and Benin (+2.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Senegal and Cote d'Ivoire saw its share reduced by -9.1% and -11.9% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Ghana ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported organic surface-active products for washing the skin in Western Africa, comprising 39% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a 9.4% share of total imports. It was followed by Senegal, with an 8.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Ghana amounted to +22.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Cote d'Ivoire (+3.0% per year) and Senegal (+7.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, declining by -4% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a perceptible decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the import price increased by 16% against the previous year.
