Over the period under review, imports, however, posted notable growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 76% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, imports of organo-sulphur compounds and other organo-inorganic compounds contracted sharply to $X in 2022. In general, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 72% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports of reached the maximum at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Nigeria was the key importing country with an import of about X tons, which finished at 66% of total imports. Ghana (X tons) took a 17% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Cote d'Ivoire (8.2%). Burkina Faso (X tons), Mauritania (X tons) and Senegal (X tons) took a little share of total imports.
Imports into Nigeria increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Ghana (+8.3%), Mauritania (+3.3%), Cote d'Ivoire (+2.7%) and Burkina Faso (+2.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ghana emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +8.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Senegal (-7.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Nigeria and Ghana increased by +6.4 and +4.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported organo-sulphur compounds and other organo-inorganic compounds in Western Africa, comprising 67% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ghana ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Cote d'Ivoire, with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Nigeria was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Ghana (+6.2% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (-1.1% per year).
