Ghana represented the largest importer of oriented strandboard (OSB) in Western Africa, with the volume of imports recording X cubic meters, which was near 55% of total imports in 2021. Guinea (X cubic meters) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 15% share, followed by Nigeria (7.5%), Cabo Verde (7.4%) and Niger (5.4%). Benin (X cubic meters) and Cote d'Ivoire (X cubic meters) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to oriented strandboard (OSB) imports into Ghana stood at +12.5%. At the same time, Cote d'Ivoire (+31.2%) and Niger (+30.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cote d'Ivoire emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +31.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Benin (-1.5%), Cabo Verde (-6.5%), Guinea (-7.2%) and Nigeria (-28.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Ghana (+46 p.p.), Niger (+5.2 p.p.) and Cote d'Ivoire (+2.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Nigeria saw its share reduced by -61.5% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Ghana ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported oriented strandboard (OSB) in Western Africa, comprising 48% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Guinea ($X), with a 21% share of total imports. It was followed by Cabo Verde, with a 7.8% share.

In Ghana, oriented strandboard (OSB) imports increased at an average annual rate of +11.0% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Guinea (+0.5% per year) and Cabo Verde (-12.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per cubic meter in 2021, rising by 30% against the previous year. Import price indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, oriented strandboard (OSB) import price increased by +74.6% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the import price increased by 35% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per cubic meter in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per cubic meter), while Nigeria ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Guinea (+8.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
