Moreover, other cereals production in Guinea exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Nigeria (X tons), sevenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Mali (X tons), with a 5.8% share.

In Guinea, other cereals production expanded at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Nigeria (+0.3% per year) and Mali (+10.3% per year).

In 2021, the average yield of other cerealses in Western Africa reduced modestly to X kg per ha, approximately equating 2020. In general, the yield continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the yield increased by 5.2%. Over the period under review, the other cereals yield attained the peak level at X kg per ha in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2021, the total area harvested in terms of other cerealses production in Western Africa contracted modestly to X ha, waning by -2.4% compared with the previous year's figure. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the harvested area increased by 11%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to other cereals production reached the maximum at X ha in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.

Exports in Western Africa

In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of other cerealses, when their volume decreased by -70.2% to X tons. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate mild growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 349%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, other cereals exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 282% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

Nigeria (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) represented roughly 58% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Burkina Faso (X tons), Togo (X tons), Mali (X tons) and Senegal (X tons), together committing a 39% share of total exports. Guinea (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Nigeria (with a CAGR of +119.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) emerged as the largest other cereals supplier in Western Africa, comprising 82% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a 5.8% share of total exports. It was followed by Senegal, with a 3.2% share.

In Nigeria, other cereals exports increased at an average annual rate of +162.3% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Cote d'Ivoire (+37.1% per year) and Senegal (+25.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 613% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a significant increase. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Western Africa

Other cereals imports dropped markedly to X tons in 2021, declining by -94.7% against the year before. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 403% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2020, and then declined sharply in the following year.

In value terms, other cereals imports declined dramatically to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 376%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then reduced notably in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Nigeria (X tons) and Ghana (X tons) were the key importers of other cerealses in Western Africa, together making up 60% of total imports. Niger (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Cabo Verde (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Gambia (X tons) and Mauritania (X tons). All these countries together took near 33% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Nigeria (with a CAGR of +209.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Ghana ($X), Cote d'Ivoire ($X) and Nigeria ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 90% of total imports.

Nigeria, with a CAGR of +239.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, growing by 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price posted a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the import price increased by 128% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Gambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
