It was distantly followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Ghana (X tons), together committing a 34% share of total exports. Benin (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Benin, with a CAGR of +120.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 18% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 27% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Benin ($X per ton), while Senegal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +33.9% against 2017 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 38% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, packaging materials imports stood at $X in 2022. Total imports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last decade. The countries with the highest levels of packaging materials imports in 2022 were Nigeria (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Ghana (X tons), together recording 81% of total import. It was distantly followed by Senegal (X tons), achieving a 10% share of total imports. Benin (X tons), Mauritania (X tons) and Togo (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Benin (with a CAGR of +23.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X), Cote d'Ivoire ($X) and Ghana ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 83% of total imports. Senegal, Mauritania, Togo and Benin lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 15%.

Mauritania, with a CAGR of +12.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -6.4% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a slight curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the import price increased by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Togo ($X per ton), while Benin ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Togo (+6.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
