In value terms, packaging materials production shrank modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production continues to indicate a noticeable contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the production volume increased by 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Western Africa
Packaging materials exports dropped markedly to X tons in 2022, waning by -41.6% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 132% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then declined remarkably in the following year.
In value terms, packaging materials exports dropped sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a temperate increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 85%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then reduced remarkably in the following year.
Exports by Country
Senegal represented the major exporter of packaging materials in Western Africa, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was near 58% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Ghana (X tons), together committing a 34% share of total exports. Benin (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from Senegal increased at an average annual rate of +13.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Benin (+85.2%) and Nigeria (+6.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Benin emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +85.2% from 2012-2022. Cote d'Ivoire and Ghana experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Senegal (+35 p.p.) and Benin (+3.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Ghana (-4.7 p.p.) and Cote d'Ivoire (-7.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Senegal ($X), Cote d'Ivoire ($X) and Benin ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together accounting for 83% of total exports.
Benin, with a CAGR of +120.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 18% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 27% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Benin ($X per ton), while Senegal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Benin (+18.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Western Africa
In 2022, packaging materials imports in Western Africa expanded rapidly to X tons, surging by 8.2% compared with the previous year. Total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +33.9% against 2017 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 38% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, packaging materials imports stood at $X in 2022. Total imports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +57.9% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 35%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
The countries with the highest levels of packaging materials imports in 2022 were Nigeria (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Ghana (X tons), together recording 81% of total import. It was distantly followed by Senegal (X tons), achieving a 10% share of total imports. Benin (X tons), Mauritania (X tons) and Togo (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Benin (with a CAGR of +23.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Nigeria ($X), Cote d'Ivoire ($X) and Ghana ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 83% of total imports. Senegal, Mauritania, Togo and Benin lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 15%.
Mauritania, with a CAGR of +12.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -6.4% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a slight curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the import price increased by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Togo ($X per ton), while Benin ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Togo (+6.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
