P-Xylene Market Size in Western Africa

In 2021, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in the West African p-xylene market, when its value decreased by -5.4% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a prominent increase. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then fell in the following year.

From 2015 to 2015, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Nigeria was relatively modest.

In 2021, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of p-xylene, when their volume decreased by -29.9% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, recorded significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 117% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2020, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, p-xylene imports shrank remarkably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 113% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2020, and then dropped rapidly in the following year.

Nigeria prevails in imports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 97% of total imports in 2021. Mauritania (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the p-xylene imports, with a CAGR of +26.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mauritania (+13.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of Nigeria (+2.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Mauritania (-2.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported p-xylene in Western Africa, comprising 95% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mauritania ($X), with a 2.2% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Nigeria amounted to +20.4%.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, reducing by -2.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the import price increased by 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Mauritania ($X per ton), while Nigeria stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritania (+7.4%).
