Papaya Market Size in Western Africa
The West African papaya market totaled $X in 2022, standing approx. at the previous year. In Nigeria, papaya production increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2012-2022.
In 2022, the average papaya yield in Western Africa stood at X tons per ha, almost unchanged from the previous year. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 6.6% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
The papaya harvested area declined modestly to X ha in 2022, reducing by -1.6% against the previous year's figure. Overall, the harvested area, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 4.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to papaya production attained the maximum at X ha in 2021, and then dropped slightly in the following year.

Exports in Western Africa
In 2022, approx. X tons of papayas were exported in Western Africa; reducing by -24.5% against the previous year's figure. Overall, exports, however, showed a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 322% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then shrank notably in the following year.
In value terms, papaya exports reduced to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 317%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell in the following year.
Exports by Country
In 2022, Ghana (X tons) represented the key exporter of papayas in Western Africa, generating 98% of total export.
Ghana was also the fastest-growing in terms of the papayas exports, with a CAGR of +28.8% from 2012 to 2022. While the share of Ghana (+25 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Ghana ($X) also remains the largest papaya supplier in Western Africa.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Ghana totaled +21.2%.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 13% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a perceptible shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 an increase of 43%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Ghana.
From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Ghana amounted to -5.9% per year.
Papaya Imports
Imports in Western Africa
For the eleventh consecutive year, Western Africa recorded growth in supplies from abroad of papayas, which increased by 238% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports enjoyed a significant expansion. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, papaya imports rose notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 62%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
The purchases of the one major importers of papayas, namely Burkina Faso, represented more than two-thirds of total import.
Burkina Faso was also the fastest-growing in terms of the papayas imports, with a CAGR of +137.0% from 2012 to 2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Burkina Faso increased by +97 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Burkina Faso ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported papayas in Western Africa.
In Burkina Faso, papaya imports increased at an average annual rate of +91.9% over the period from 2012-2022.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -66.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a significant decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 37%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by prices for Burkina Faso.
