Overall, exports continue to indicate a significant expansion. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Cote d'Ivoire dominates exports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 93% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Ghana (X tons), generating a 6.5% share of total exports.

Cote d'Ivoire was also the fastest-growing in terms of the paper and paperboard (creped, crinkled, embossed or perforated) exports, with a CAGR of +29.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Ghana (+10.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Cote d'Ivoire increased by +37 percentage points.

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X) remains the largest paper and paperboard supplier in Western Africa, comprising 95% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ghana ($X), with a 4.1% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Cote d'Ivoire amounted to +16.6%.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -49% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 23% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Ghana amounted to $X per ton.

Imports in Western Africa

Paper and paperboard imports soared to X tons in 2022, increasing by 68% on the previous year's figure. Overall, imports showed a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 263%. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, paper and paperboard imports soared to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 172%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

Nigeria represented the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which amounted to 64% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Togo (X tons), making up a 24% share of total imports. The following importers - Senegal (X tons), Mauritania (X tons) and Gambia (X tons) - together made up 6.5% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to paper and paperboard imports into Nigeria stood at +29.7%. At the same time, Togo (+66.5%), Gambia (+26.5%) and Senegal (+23.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Togo emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +66.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Mauritania (-1.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Nigeria (+30 p.p.) and Togo (+23 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Mauritania saw its share reduced by -14.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported paper and paperboard (creped, crinkled, embossed or perforated) in Western Africa, comprising 60% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Togo ($X), with a 9.2% share of total imports. It was followed by Mauritania, with an 8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Nigeria totaled +25.9%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Togo (+47.3% per year) and Mauritania (+7.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a noticeable reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the import price increased by 70% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mauritania ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritania (+8.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
