In 2021, Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) was the key exporter of paper sacks and bags, committing 77% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Ghana (X tons), committing a 17% share of total exports. Senegal (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Cote d'Ivoire increased at an average annual rate of +60.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Ghana (+74.1%) and Senegal (+30.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ghana emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +74.1% from 2012-2021. In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X) remains the largest paper sack and bag supplier in Western Africa, comprising 78% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ghana ($X), with a 15% share of total exports.

In Cote d'Ivoire, paper sack and bag exports increased at an average annual rate of +53.6% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Ghana (+68.9% per year) and Senegal (+26.3% per year).

Imports in Western Africa

After nine years of growth, purchases abroad of paper sacks and bags decreased by -6.1% to X tons in 2021. Total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +75.9% against 2012 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 18% against the previous year. The countries with the highest levels of paper sack and bag imports in 2021 were Senegal (X tons), Burkina Faso (X tons), Benin (X tons), Guinea (X tons), Togo (X tons), Ghana (X tons) and Mauritania (X tons), together accounting for 91% of total import. Gambia (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Burkina Faso (with a CAGR of +82.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Senegal ($X), Burkina Faso ($X) and Benin ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 52% share of total imports.

Burkina Faso, with a CAGR of +75.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 5.1% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the import price increased by 10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mauritania ($X per ton), while Gambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritania (+1.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
