Pear Market Size in Western Africa

In 2021, the West African pear market decreased by -3.6% to $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, consumption, however, posted a perceptible expansion. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

Pear Production in Western Africa

In value terms, pear production declined to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -40.7% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 92% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2021, production growth remained at a lower figure.

The country with the largest volume of pear production was Guinea (X tons), comprising approx. 70% of total volume. Moreover, pear production in Guinea exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Benin (X tons), twofold.

In Guinea, pear production increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the period from 2012-2021.

Exports in Western Africa

In 2021, exports of pears in Western Africa soared to X tons, growing by 312% on 2020 figures. In general, exports posted significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 11,568% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, pear exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 4,574%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, Senegal (X tons) represented the major exporter of pears in Western Africa, creating 100% of total export.

Senegal experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of pears. While the share of Senegal (+99 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In 2021, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 243% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a abrupt descent. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, after six years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of pears, when their volume decreased by -10.2% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 103%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, pear imports contracted modestly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 76% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then fell slightly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Nigeria (X tons) was the main importer of pears, committing 45% of total imports. Cabo Verde (X tons) held a 21% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Senegal (14%) and Cote d'Ivoire (8.8%). Ghana (X tons), Burkina Faso (X tons) and Mali (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

Imports into Nigeria increased at an average annual rate of +43.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Burkina Faso (+507.7%), Cabo Verde (+17.6%), Cote d'Ivoire (+12.1%), Mali (+10.7%), Ghana (+7.8%) and Senegal (+7.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Burkina Faso emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +507.7% from 2012-2021. While the share of Nigeria (+45 p.p.), Senegal (+14 p.p.) and Burkina Faso (+3.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Mali (-1.9 p.p.), Cabo Verde (-5.4 p.p.), Ghana (-7.1 p.p.) and Cote d'Ivoire (-8.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported pears in Western Africa, comprising 48% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Cabo Verde ($X), with a 23% share of total imports. It was followed by Senegal, with a 14% share.

In Nigeria, pear imports increased at an average annual rate of +40.4% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Cabo Verde (+19.0% per year) and Senegal (+9.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 5.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 7.5%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cabo Verde ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Senegal (+2.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
