In 2022, the average green peas yield in Western Africa fell to X tons per ha, therefore, remained relatively stable against 2021. Overall, the yield showed a noticeable descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 40%. Over the period under review, the green peas yield hit record highs at X tons per ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the harvested area of peas (green) in Western Africa totaled X ha, standing approx. at the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 5.9% against the previous year. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, shipments abroad of peas (green) decreased by -6% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports saw a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 27%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, green peas exports contracted to $X in 2022. In general, exports saw a deep reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2022, Nigeria (X tons) was the key exporter of peas (green), creating 48% of total exports. Gambia (X tons) held a 21% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Senegal (9.8%), Niger (8.6%) and Burkina Faso (5.3%). The following exporters - Togo (X tons) and Ghana (X tons) - together made up 7% of total exports.
Exports from Nigeria decreased at an average annual rate of -19.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Niger (+24.0%), Togo (+13.4%), Senegal (+9.6%) and Burkina Faso (+6.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Niger emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +24.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Ghana (-2.3%) and Gambia (-7.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Gambia, Senegal, Niger, Burkina Faso, Togo and Ghana increased by +12, +9, +8.4, +4.7, +3.9 and +2.1 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, Nigeria ($X) remains the largest green peas supplier in Western Africa, comprising 41% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Gambia ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Senegal, with a 17% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Nigeria stood at -24.9%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Gambia (-13.6% per year) and Senegal (+12.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, stabilizing at the previous year. In general, the export price saw a abrupt contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 64% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while Niger ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Burkina Faso (+7.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

After four years of growth, supplies from abroad of peas (green) decreased by -11.5% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a abrupt downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 49% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, green peas imports shrank markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a deep downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 62% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Nigeria (X tons), distantly followed by Senegal (X tons), Mali (X tons) and Ghana (X tons) were the major importers of peas (green), together creating 85% of total imports. Gambia (X tons), Mauritania (X tons) and Burkina Faso (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Gambia (with a CAGR of +12.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Senegal ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Mali ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 69% of total imports. Ghana, Burkina Faso, Gambia and Mauritania lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 24%.
Gambia, with a CAGR of +19.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, declining by -4.1% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.6%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the import price increased by 40%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Burkina Faso ($X per ton), while Mali ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Gambia (+6.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
