Exports in Western Africa
Pedestrian-controlled tractor exports dropped sharply to X units in 2022, shrinking by -23.7% against 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 390%. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, pedestrian-controlled tractor exports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a perceptible shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 128%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Niger represented the major exporter of pedestrian-controlled tractors in Western Africa, with the volume of exports reaching X units, which was approx. 69% of total exports in 2022. Senegal (X units) took a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Burkina Faso (10%). Nigeria (X units) and Ghana (X units) held a minor share of total exports.
Exports from Niger increased at an average annual rate of +17.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Senegal (+30.2%), Burkina Faso (+28.2%) and Ghana (+14.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Senegal emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +30.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Nigeria (-11.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Niger (+23 p.p.), Senegal (+9.2 p.p.) and Burkina Faso (+7.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Nigeria (-41.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Niger ($X) emerged as the largest pedestrian-controlled tractor supplier in Western Africa, comprising 65% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Burkina Faso ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Senegal, with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Niger stood at +2.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Burkina Faso (+40.3% per year) and Senegal (+20.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per unit, picking up by 79% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a deep reduction. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Burkina Faso ($X per unit), while Ghana ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Burkina Faso (+3.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Pedestrian-Controlled Tractor Imports
Imports in Western Africa
In 2022, approx. X units of pedestrian-controlled tractors were imported in Western Africa; picking up by 16% against the previous year. In general, imports enjoyed a slight increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 170%. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.
In value terms, pedestrian-controlled tractor imports shrank to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 201%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then contracted in the following year.
Imports by Country
Nigeria represented the key importing country with an import of around X units, which resulted at 48% of total imports. Togo (X units) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 10% share, followed by Ghana (8.3%), Benin (8.2%) and Senegal (5.4%). The following importers - Mauritania (X units) and Cote d'Ivoire (X units) - each reached an 8.4% share of total imports.
Imports into Nigeria increased at an average annual rate of +28.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Benin (+47.8%), Mauritania (+25.0%), Cote d'Ivoire (+24.5%) and Senegal (+9.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Benin emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +47.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Ghana (-4.9%) and Togo (-16.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Nigeria (+44 p.p.), Benin (+8 p.p.), Mauritania (+3.8 p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (+3.5 p.p.) and Senegal (+2.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Ghana (-7.8 p.p.) and Togo (-63.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported pedestrian-controlled tractors in Western Africa, comprising 46% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ghana ($X), with a 9.8% share of total imports. It was followed by Cote d'Ivoire, with an 8.5% share.
In Nigeria, pedestrian-controlled tractor imports increased at an average annual rate of +25.1% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Ghana (-2.7% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (+16.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, reducing by -22.9% against the previous year. Import price indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +8.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the import price increased by 217% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per unit), while Togo ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
