Persimmon Market Size in Western Africa

For the fifth consecutive year, the West African persimmon market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 8.4% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption saw a buoyant expansion. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Persimmon Production in Western Africa

In value terms, persimmon production declined to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, posted a modest increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the production volume increased by 270% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Benin (X tons) remains the largest persimmon producing country in Western Africa, accounting for 93% of total volume. Moreover, persimmon production in Benin exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume in Benin stood at +2.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Cote d'Ivoire (+2.2% per year) and Mali (+2.5% per year).

Persimmon Exports

Exports in Western Africa

In 2021, shipments abroad of persimmons decreased by -2% to X tons, falling for the fourth year in a row after four years of growth. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 9,489% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, persimmon exports contracted slightly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports showed a slight descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 18,330%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Cote d'Ivoire was the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which accounted for 86% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Ghana (X tons), achieving a 14% share of total exports.

Exports from Cote d'Ivoire increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Ghana (+8.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ghana emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +8.7% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Ghana and Cote d'Ivoire increased by +7 and +4.3 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X) remains the largest persimmon supplier in Western Africa, comprising 73% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ghana ($X), with a 27% share of total exports.

In Cote d'Ivoire, persimmon exports contracted by an average annual rate of -2.2% over the period from 2012-2021.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a perceptible downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 92% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while Cote d'Ivoire stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+1.2%).

Persimmon Imports

Imports in Western Africa

Persimmon imports surged to X tons in 2021, with an increase of 30% on the previous year. Overall, imports saw a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 165%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, persimmon imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 118%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

Mauritania was the key importer of persimmons in Western Africa, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was near 48% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Cabo Verde (X tons), Mali (X tons) and Senegal (X tons), together comprising a 42% share of total imports. Burkina Faso (X tons), Niger (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to persimmon imports into Mauritania stood at +57.5%. At the same time, Niger (+80.8%), Mali (+57.1%), Senegal (+43.2%), Cabo Verde (+33.0%), Cote d'Ivoire (+33.0%) and Burkina Faso (+27.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Niger emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +80.8% from 2012-2021. Mauritania (+26 p.p.), Mali (+6.8 p.p.) and Niger (+2.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Cote d'Ivoire, Burkina Faso and Cabo Verde saw its share reduced by -2.7%, -8.2% and -19.1% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest persimmon importing markets in Western Africa were Mauritania ($X), Cabo Verde ($X) and Mali ($X), with a combined 74% share of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Mali, with a CAGR of +67.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, rising by 2.4% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 14% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Mauritania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
