Pineapple Market Size in Western Africa

The West African pineapple market stood at $X in 2022, leveling off at the previous year. The third position in this ranking was taken by Benin (X tons), with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Nigeria was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Ghana (+1.1% per year) and Benin (-1.2% per year).

The average pineapple yield fell modestly to X tons per ha in 2022, remaining constant against the previous year's figure. Overall, the yield, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 3.6% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2021, and then contracted modestly in the following year. In 2022, the amount of pineapples exported in Western Africa declined to X tons, which is down by -8.1% on the previous year's figure. In general, exports continue to indicate a perceptible descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 79% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, pineapple exports reduced to $X in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a slight descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 82% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Cote d'Ivoire represented the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which amounted to 66% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Ghana (X tons), committing a 30% share of total exports. Benin (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

Cote d'Ivoire experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of pineapples. Benin (-7.4%) and Ghana (-7.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Cote d'Ivoire (+16 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Ghana saw its share reduced by -16.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest pineapple supplying countries in Western Africa were Cote d'Ivoire ($X), Ghana ($X) and Benin ($X), together accounting for 98% of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Cote d'Ivoire, with a CAGR of +5.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -3.4% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 26%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, approx. X tons of pineapples were imported in Western Africa; growing by 90% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports recorded a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 149%. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, pineapple imports fell remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports showed a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 109% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Togo was the major importer of pineapples in Western Africa, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was near 76% of total imports in 2022. Burkina Faso (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Cabo Verde (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 21% share of total imports.

Togo was also the fastest-growing in terms of the pineapples imports, with a CAGR of +173.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Burkina Faso (+63.1%) and Cabo Verde (+4.2%) displayed positive paces of growth.
