The West African cement pipe market expanded to $X in 2022, growing by 2.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a pronounced contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 120%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cement pipe exports expanded modestly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 105% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Mauritania (X tons) and Togo (X tons) were the major exporters of pipes and other articles of cement in 2022, recording near 22% and 21% of total exports, respectively. Nigeria (X tons) held a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Sierra Leone (12%), Cote d'Ivoire (11%) and Cabo Verde (8.6%). Mali (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Mali (with a CAGR of +41.9%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Mauritania ($X) remains the largest cement pipe supplier in Western Africa, comprising 45% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Nigeria ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Cabo Verde, with a 14% share.

In Mauritania, cement pipe exports increased at an average annual rate of +79.1% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Nigeria (+6.8% per year) and Cabo Verde (+24.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -23.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a prominent expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the export price increased by 168% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then declined remarkably in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mauritania ($X per ton), while Sierra Leone ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, approx. X tons of pipes and other articles of cement were imported in Western Africa; reducing by -24.5% against the year before. Overall, imports faced a deep downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 61% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cement pipe imports fell notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a deep downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 80%. The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 97% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Cabo Verde ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
