Exports in Western Africa
In 2022, shipments abroad of plastic baths, shower-baths, sinks and wash-basins was finally on the rise to reach X units for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, exports, however, showed a drastic downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 620% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, plastic bath or sink exports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, faced a abrupt setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 448% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Cote d'Ivoire dominates exports structure, finishing at X units, which was approx. 77% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Ghana (X units), mixing up a 9.3% share of total exports. Senegal (X units), Nigeria (X units) and Togo (X units) held a little share of total exports.
Cote d'Ivoire was also the fastest-growing in terms of the plastic baths, shower-baths, sinks and wash-basins exports, with a CAGR of +51.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Togo (+12.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Senegal (-7.2%), Nigeria (-24.1%) and Ghana (-27.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Cote d'Ivoire and Togo increased by +77 and +3.1 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X) remains the largest plastic bath or sink supplier in Western Africa, comprising 72% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Senegal ($X), with a 9.2% share of total exports. It was followed by Ghana, with a 6.2% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Cote d'Ivoire amounted to +47.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Senegal (-3.7% per year) and Ghana (-31.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per unit, waning by -5% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a perceptible downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the export price increased by 16% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per unit), while Ghana ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Senegal (+3.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Imports of Plastic Baths, Shower-Baths, Sinks And Wash-Basins
Imports in Western Africa
For the third year in a row, Western Africa recorded growth in overseas purchases of plastic baths, shower-baths, sinks and wash-basins, which increased by 105% to X units in 2022. In general, imports saw a strong increase. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, plastic bath or sink imports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 87%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
Nigeria prevails in imports structure, reaching X units, which was near 79% of total imports in 2022. Ghana (X units) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X units). All these countries together took near 11% share of total imports. The following importers - Guinea (X units) and Benin (X units) - each reached a 3.7% share of total imports.
Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the plastic baths, shower-baths, sinks and wash-basins imports, with a CAGR of +26.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Benin (+15.6%) and Cote d'Ivoire (+12.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Guinea (-5.0%) and Ghana (-5.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Nigeria (+49 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Guinea and Ghana saw its share reduced by -10.6% and -30.6% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported plastic baths, shower-baths, sinks and wash-basins in Western Africa, comprising 52% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ghana ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Cote d'Ivoire, with a 14% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Nigeria totaled +20.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Ghana (+8.2% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (+17.4% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, which is down by -37.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a slight reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the import price increased by 25%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2017 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per unit), while Nigeria ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+14.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
