Plastic Container Market Size in Western Africa

In 2021, the West African plastic container market decreased by -0.9% to $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a remarkable increase. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then fell modestly in the following year.

Plastic Container Production in Western Africa

In value terms, plastic container production fell slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 64% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.

Exports in Western Africa

In 2021, overseas shipments of plastic containers increased by 34% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Overall, exports, however, showed a deep reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 309% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, plastic container exports expanded notably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 206% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Senegal (X tons) dominates exports structure, together achieving 85% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Ghana (X tons), comprising a 5.5% share of total exports. The following exporters - Togo (X tons), Mauritania (X tons) and Niger (X tons) - together made up 6.7% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Mauritania (with a CAGR of +70.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X), Senegal ($X) and Ghana ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 91% of total exports. Niger, Mauritania and Togo lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 5.8%.

Mauritania, with a CAGR of +56.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, dropping by -15.8% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a modest increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the export price increased by 74%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+13.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Western Africa

In 2021, the amount of plastic containers imported in Western Africa rose significantly to X tons, surging by 12% on the year before. In general, imports recorded a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 84%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

In value terms, plastic container imports reached $X in 2021. Overall, imports recorded a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 77%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Senegal (X tons), distantly followed by Mauritania (X tons), Guinea (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Liberia (X tons), Ghana (X tons) and Sierra Leone (X tons) represented the main importers of plastic containers, together comprising 84% of total imports.

Imports into Senegal increased at an average annual rate of +19.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Liberia (+34.2%), Guinea (+21.0%), Cote d'Ivoire (+15.4%), Sierra Leone (+12.5%), Nigeria (+6.8%), Mauritania (+5.9%) and Ghana (+4.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Liberia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +34.2% from 2012-2021. Senegal (+13 p.p.), Liberia (+6.2 p.p.), Guinea (+4.9 p.p.) and Cote d'Ivoire (+2.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Nigeria, Ghana and Mauritania saw its share reduced by -3.4%, -3.7% and -7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest plastic container importing markets in Western Africa were Senegal ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Mauritania ($X), together accounting for 48% of total imports. Cote d'Ivoire, Guinea, Ghana, Liberia and Sierra Leone lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 35%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Liberia, with a CAGR of +27.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -9.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a perceptible decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 13% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Mauritania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
