Overall, exports, however, recorded a significant decrease. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, non-cellular polyethylene film exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt shrinkage. Exports by Country

Senegal represented the largest exporter of non-cellular polyethylene films, sheets, foil and strip in Western Africa, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was near 56% of total exports in 2021. Nigeria (X tons) took a 15% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Cote d'Ivoire (12%) and Togo (8.1%). Benin (X tons), Ghana (X tons) and Mali (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Senegal was also the fastest-growing in terms of the non-cellular polyethylene films, sheets, foil and strip exports, with a CAGR of +65.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Benin (+9.9%) and Ghana (+5.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Nigeria experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Togo (-15.4%), Mali (-19.9%) and Cote d'Ivoire (-37.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Senegal (+56 p.p.), Nigeria (+13 p.p.), Benin (+3.9 p.p.), Togo (+3.6 p.p.) and Ghana (+2.4 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Cote d'Ivoire (-79.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Senegal ($X) emerged as the largest non-cellular polyethylene film supplier in Western Africa, comprising 66% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Nigeria ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Cote d'Ivoire, with a 6.2% share.

In Senegal, non-cellular polyethylene film exports expanded at an average annual rate of +55.7% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Nigeria (+3.9% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (-38.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 53% against the previous year. Export price indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 71% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Western Africa

In 2021, non-cellular polyethylene film imports in Western Africa dropped to X tons, waning by -14.3% on the previous year. Overall, imports, however, posted a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 49%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, non-cellular polyethylene film imports reduced to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +49.2% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 62%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then reduced in the following year.

In 2021, Ghana (X tons), distantly followed by Nigeria (X tons), Burkina Faso (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Mauritania (X tons) and Guinea (X tons) represented the largest importers of non-cellular polyethylene films, sheets, foil and strip, together committing 89% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Ghana (with a CAGR of +13.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Ghana ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported non-cellular polyethylene films, sheets, foil and strip in Western Africa, comprising 31% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Nigeria ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Burkina Faso, with a 13% share.

In Ghana, non-cellular polyethylene film imports increased at an average annual rate of +12.4% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Nigeria (-4.4% per year) and Burkina Faso (+6.7% per year).

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Ghana ($X per ton) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) and Mauritania ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritania (+0.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
